Latest projects.

WoodboWoodbo is a powerful management tool for young people's care homes in Denmark, that allows the staff to communicate and run the service efficiently. I have spent the last 10 months developing this complex, user-friendly application.

The company and application was established in partnership with my brother-in-law, who also happens to know the care home industry inside-out. We hired Simon Starr (@sstarr), a brilliant Ruby on Rails developer from Bristol, to work on the RoR development and to ensure that we created a strong platform for future development of the application.

My applications.

Working on a range of applications and online services has given me a great insight into how a user-friendly and well designed system is created. I've successfully developed and launched two applications of my own. In 2009 I launched a small online SMS service used with Basecamp®. Subsequently I launched an online tool for managing residential institutions for young people in 2011. Read more below.

  • WoodboWoodbo is an online tool for managing young people's care homes in Denmark and is targeting the Danish market for these social institutions. Woodbo is developed in Ruby on Rails and is using various Ruby Gems and jQuery plug-ins. I am involved in all aspects of the company and application — from setting up the business, creating the application layout, integrating with external services, and continuously developing the service.

Woodbo launched with some significant clients and there has been a strong interest from many other Danish care homes. The system includes; secure record keeping, personal information, medicine inventory and dispensing, a message system, a task system, a calendar, roster and staff management, and reporting.

  • txtinn^txtinn^ is a simple online application used with Basecamp® that allows subscribers to create, schedule and broadcast SMS messages. The application connects with an existing Basecamp® account and keeps users informed by automatically associating a scheduled SMS broadcasts with projects and milestones. The application is developed in PHP with use of jQuery UI and jQuery plug-ins. I developed the concept and created all designs, HTML layouts, CSS and copy. The PHP/MySQL work was done by an external developer.

How I work.

I believe in the agile software development methodology and I enjoy collaborating with various teams within organisations. I'm often involved in the full process when developing a website or an application.

  1. Research
Develop a full understanding of the business. Researching competitors, market trends, products and services, and client brands.
  2. Concept and ideas
Reviewing client information and project briefs. I enjoy working on concepts and have great experience in presenting ideas and concept to clients.
  3. Designs
    User-friendly. Stylish. Functional.
  4. Copywriting
In my mind copywriting is design too. It is of most importance to any project, not only for SEO and corporate language, but also for engaging users and delivering a clear message.
  5. Wireframing and prototyping
Wireframing is an important part of a project. The visualisation process concentrates on getting the right elements of the UI in the right places. I often create working prototypes of the application to emphasise the functionality and usability.
  6. HTML, CSS and layout coding
I always handcraft my HTML5/CSS3 layout and use modern techniques to make dynamic and beautiful code. I usually use the jQuery JavaScript framework.
  7. QA and testing
Everything needs to work as it should and nothing will be overlooked. I always test every possible user flow and interaction — and ensure legacy interfaces and devices are not forgotten.
  8. Follow-Up
My responsibility doesn't end once the site or app is built. I always offer my support and help on all future development work.

I prefer working in OS X or iOS, but I also master Windows and Ubuntu.

I use lots of technologies, including HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, ActionScript, PHP, Ruby on Rails, WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and Git.

The ecosystem of applications is constantly changing and I always keep up with the trends. Currently I work in Coda, Google Chrome, Tower, VMware Fusion, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, ScreenFlow + lots of small applications and utility programs.
